TECHNICAL OWNERSHIP. BUSINESS RESPONSIBILITY.
I help companies stop worrying about their software.
I’m Andrei Kaleshka, founder of WideFix. I’ve been building and maintaining software since 2009. I take ownership of existing applications, solve difficult technical problems, and help teams deliver without constant supervision. Ruby on Rails and PostgreSQL are my deepest specialties, but the real work is understanding what the business needs and making sound decisions to get there.
Where I can make a difference
Whether a developer has left, releases have slowed down, or an application needs a clear technical direction, I step in to understand the situation and take responsibility for moving it forward.
Own an existing Rails application
Take over from a previous team, understand the application and its infrastructure, stabilize the parts that cause trouble, and build a clear plan for ongoing maintenance and improvements.
Modernize without disrupting users
Upgrade Ruby and Rails, replace outdated dependencies, improve slow database queries, and migrate data and infrastructure in controlled stages.
Connect business systems
Build APIs and integrations for payments, reporting, and operations. My work includes Stripe and ACH payments, GraphQL APIs, and financial reporting across multiple platforms.
Give the team technical direction
Work as a solutions architect or fractional CTO to make technical decisions, manage dependencies between teams, unblock delivery, and connect engineering priorities to business needs.
Experience you can verify
I write about problems I encounter in real codebases: upgrades, database behavior, production performance, and the small engineering decisions that make a system easier to live with.
With the WideFix team, I’ve helped reduce hosting costs, improve search performance, automate payment collection, and deliver APIs while existing applications kept working. These projects are described in our case studies.
I’m the author of Rake Task Management Essentials, published by Packt. I maintain open-source Ruby libraries, including Actual DB Schema and Migration Data, that have reached millions of downloads. These are tools built from real problems I have encountered in production.
How I work
I start with the business and the code that already exists. Which workflows must keep running? Where are users or the team losing time? What makes the next release risky?
From there, I take responsibility for priorities and execution. I favor focused changes, clear communication, and gradual migrations. Reusing working code, protecting data integrity, and making the team’s next change easier often matter more than replacing everything at once.
I use agentic AI coding tools, including Claude Code, daily for codebase research, implementation, and repetitive work. I review the generated changes, check the affected user journeys, and verify critical workflows before release. I make the technical tradeoffs and remain accountable for what ships.
I carry work across frontend, backend, and infrastructure when that is what a finished feature needs. Clients receive concise updates on progress, next steps, and decisions. If something blocks delivery, I raise it early and propose a way forward. When a project needs more capacity, I work with a small WideFix team rather than adding layers of management.
